Saturday June 1, 2024 Projects


FILLED 1 – 3 p.m. Brookside BathPlanting flowers in individual pots for the residents. We will also have a balloon twister for the residents enjoyment. Family Friendly – all ages. Volunteers Needed: 8.

1 – 3 p.m. Brown Bag BlessingsBrown Bag Blessings will provide a brown bag lunch or dinner for those at the Haven of Rest. We will meet at New Hope Baptist Church located at 1706 S. Hawkins Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44320 to pack the bags. We will deliver them to the Haven of Rest at 2:30 pm. Please note, we will not serve, we will only drop off. Bring empty boxes to carry the bags. There will also be a tour of the Haven of Rest and a breakdown of services provided after the bag drop off. Family Friendly – all agesVolunteers Needed: 15.

10  – 11:30 a.m. Charades & Snacks at Village of St. Edward – Join us for snacks and a game of simple charades with the residents of the Village of St. Edward. Families with children who are willing to act out simple charades are encouraged to sign up. Family Friendly – all agesVolunteers Needed: 15.

9 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Habitat Restore – Volunteers will help Restore staff unload items from our Restore trucks and assist customers with their needs. If the weather is nice that day we will be outside pulling weeds and picking up trash. Habitat for Humanity of Summit County 18 and older Volunteers Needed: 8. NOTE: Adults and minors must have signed waivers from the ReStore.

FILLED 9 a.m. – noon – Harmony HouseHarmony House is an emergency supportive housing program for young people ages 18-24. Harmony House provides emergency housing, transitional housing, rapid rehousing and inclement weather shelter. Harmony House is the only program of its kind in Summit County. This year we will be transforming a basement space into a clean, fresh storage area. Family Friendly. 15 and up. Volunteers Needed: 10

FILLED 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Improvements for Veterans in Need  –
External painting of entire home, wheel chair ramp construction and replacement of kitchen sink. Veteran home sites in Akron and Stow. Lunch and water provided. Bring sunscreen, hat, work gloves, and safety glasses. Family Friendly – 15 and up with parent. Volunteers Needed: 25.

10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Loads of  Love – Volunteers will provide free laundry service at this outreach ministry that pays for the washer and dryer use of everyone at the laundromat and provides an opportunity for conversations with an extraordinary diverse group of customers, many of whom are from other countries. Volunteers will be guided by a group from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church who are experienced in conducting this service. Family Friendly 15 and up. Volunteers Needed: 6.

10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Loads of Service –  We’ll partner with the International Institute of Akron, Bhutanese Community Association of Akron and the Asian Services in Action to teach and assist multicultural and limited English proficient communities to do their laundry while sharing resources and information regarding community issues or opportunities through bilingual volunteers. Family Friendly 14 and up.

10 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Refugee Resources Revitalization – Update and cleanup of the ASIA Inc Building on E Market St. to bring life and appeal to our community partners and our refugee and immigrant friends in Northeast Ohio. We will be painting and cleaning the main entranceways of the building. Family Friendly 14 and up. Volunteers Needed: 10.

9 a.m. – Noon – Marcy Park Beautification – Gun Violence Prevention –  South Akron is a gun violence prevention project. When parks are maintained, gun violence declines. This is a partnership between local chapter of Moms Demand Action, Akron Parks Collaborative. Family Friendly – 5 and up. Volunteers Needed: 15.

Sunday June 2 Projects


FILLED 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Akron-Canton Foodbank – Packing and sorting food. Family Friendly but limited to age 8 and above. Volunteers Needed: 25.

1 – 4 p.m. – Battered Women’s Shelter – Help keep the Healing Garden beautiful! We will weed, plant and do general garden maintenance. In case of rain we will tie blankets, fill intake bags or another task inside the building. Family Friendly. Volunteers Needed: 15. NOTE: Minors must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

9 a.m. – 11 a.m. AND 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Cookies for the Community – Two shifts to make dough and bake a variety of cookies for Ronald McDonald House and other community organizations. Family Friendly. Volunteers Needed: 20.

1 – 4 p.m. Dresses – Dresses with Love – Bring your sewing machine and sewing tools to St Paul’s Episcopal Church of Akron to make pretty sundresses for young girls in need around the globe. A dress kit with all the pieces for each dress will be provided. All levels of experience are needed. 18 and older. Volunteers Needed: 20

2:30 – 4 p.m. – Encouragement Cards  – All ages are welcome to create encouragement cards for youth in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility, many of who receive no visitors or mail. Volunteers Needed: 10. Family Friendly 5 and Up. Volunteers Needed: Up to 20.

1 – 2:30 p.m. – Mentoring: Pay It Forward – Join Summit County Mentoring Collaborative members: Red Oak Behavioral Health’s iC.A.R.E. Mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Akron Youth Mentorship to hear firsthand from local youth and mentors about the impact mentoring has had in their lives, and how you can get involved and pay it forward as a mentor. Volunteers Needed: Adult focused, but kids are welcome. 
Research shows that youth with a caring adult mentor do better than peers, including being 46% less likely to use drugs, and 55% more likely to enroll in college, but at least 1 in 3 young people will grow up without a mentor.

FILLED 1:30 – 3 p.m. – Project Linus – The Linus Blanket project makes knotted blankets for children who stay at Akron Children’s Hospital. Simple process – cut and knot fringes on pieces of fleece. Bring scissors if you have them or they will be supplied. Family Friendly. Volunteers Needed: 20.

3 – 4:30  p.m. – Why Interfaith? – Representatives from five different faiths will discuss why they are involved in interfaith activiites. They will answer why it is important for more people to be involved. Finally they will give ways that individuals can get involved. Volunteers Needed: 20 – 30.

9 a.m. – noon – Spruce up Grace House  – Help us spruce up our property by cleaning the gutters, washing windows, and picking up trash. Grace House will provide work gloves, garbage bags and window cleaning supplies. Please bring ladders for gutter cleaning. Family Friendly all ages. Volunteers Needed: 10.

Set up 3 – 6 p.m. After Project Dinner from 4:30 – 6 p.m.– After our days of service, a  Swenson’s Burger dinner with side salads and beverages will be available for all volunteers in the Temple Israel Social Hall. Donations needed of only “pick-up” types of desserts – cookies, brownies, etc.– will be accepted. Volunteers Needed: 5. You may need to stay a bit longer for cleanup.
